The fragrance of the Ointment filled the room

John, Mark, and Matthew all documented this moment. The last time these four gathered at their home, Mary received great personal recognition and had a memorable experience. This time, she aimed to surpass her previous best in honouring Jesus. Perhaps through small spiritual habits, the loss of her brother, and moments of wondering why God seemed silent, she learned unique lessons and witnessed Lazarus being raised from the dead. Wanting to give her very best—perhaps her savings or even her dowry—Mary chose an expensive, aromatic oil: 12 ounces, 340 grams, about a pint, three-quarters of a pound, made of pure nard, worth a year’s wages. Without hesitation, she poured it on Jesus’ feet, anointing them, massaging them, and wiping them dry with her hair.
She broke cultural, status, and protocol barriers, which is exactly what God expects of us She threw open her doors in an act and expression of worship, showing active intimacy by pouring fragrant oil until the aroma filled the house. Our active participation in worship, in truth and Spirit, along with His presence, brings extraordinary outcomes. In this moment, Jesus revealed that He would not be with them forever, urging us to make use of our time and opportunities, striving to enhance our ways of expressing love, submission, keeping His teachings, and obeying His guidance. Such actions fill our homes, families, churches, and ministries with His presence—this is our desire and natural purpose in Him. This draws His attention, invites miracles, and fosters continual partnership with Him.
Father God, we offer our finest and most fragrant praises, worship, and thanksgiving, pouring out our hearts, minds, and souls. May You accept each of us and use us for Your purpose. We are willing to give up power, possessions, and personal desires so that Your will may be done in our lives. May Your Kingdom come as it is in Heaven. Help us to recognize who You are, what You have done for us, and to make the most of the time You have granted us. We will be mindful and intentional, as Mary was in her two encounters with You, which gave Jesus the opportunity to remind us of our spiritual priorities. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
