Elisha Passed the Test
Ref 2 Kg 2:1-14
This scripture tells of the transitional journey Elijah and Elisha shared—walking and talking together. There was a push and pull, but in the end, determination prevailed. What are we willing to cross over for? If you asked Elisha, he would say everything, with all his might.
He had watched Elijah closely over the years, never panicking but following with God’s peace alongside his master. Even when Elijah asked him to stay behind while he ran an errand as instructed by God, he refused to leave his side. He remained determined, persistent, loyal, collaborative, and eagerly anticipating this moment.
In various significant places, such as the pushback, Gilgal (rolling away our shame), Bethel (where God is revealed), Jericho (walls falling), and the Jordan (crossing over), each holds its own unique meaning. We can relate these moments to our lives and give thanks to God for guiding us through overcoming Gilgal, experiencing Bethel, witnessing the fall of city walls, and crossing over as testimonies from our personal journeys and ministries. A persistent walk with Christ has the power to impact the world, relying not on our own abilities but entirely on Him.
He was determined to ask boldly as soon as Elijah said, “What can I do for you before I go?” Without hesitation, he asked for succession and a double portion. It was a tough request, but Elijah said, “If you see me when I’m taken away, it will be yours.” What a great, faith-filled experience—he was determined and focused!
Miracles recorded in Elisha’s life began with witnessing his master taken up in a whirlwind, followed by retrieving the cloak that fell from Elijah. Yet Elisha was uncertain if the Power, the Spirit, had truly been bestowed upon him. When he reached the banks of the Jordan, he simply attempted his master’s method, which he had observed with great attention.
I loved the way he tested the power entrusted to him! He took his master’s cloak, struck the waters, and asked, “Where is the God of Elijah?” That’s absolute confidence in YHWH. Miraculously, He showed up, splitting the water and creating a dry path for him to cross. For one man, God performed this amazing miracle. Earlier in the passage, God had split the waters when Elijah crossed the Jordan with Elisha—now, Elisha alone experienced God’s hand in a profound way.
Let’s stay focused, ask with determination, pass the test, and claim the mantle in Jesus Name, Amen!!!
